\u201cAttention to detail\u201d for some means \u201cgood enough.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
I know, because I used to be one of those people.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
My uncle Bobby used to own Section 8 rental homes. This was in the days where renters could treat the property however they wanted and leave the landlord responsible for the clean-up.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
People would move out of my uncle\u2019s duplexes and left them looking like a disaster area. Maggots, rats, sacks of diapers, spoiled food in the refrigerator\u2014it was awful.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
As kids, he\u2019d pay us to go in and clean these houses. I was always looking for a way to make a dollar, so I gladly took the job. I didn\u2019t realize it meant Uncle Bobby got to go off and play a round of golf, but that was fine by me. I needed that dollar.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
When he came back, he went through the apartment like the Inspector General. He\u2019d point to a corner where some crumbs had collected and say, \u201cLook, this isn\u2019t clean.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Then he\u2019d walk over to the windows and see there was a hairline crack in it. \u201cThis needs to be replaced,\u201d he\u2019d say.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
I was always shocked.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\u201cUncle Bobby, we cleaned up all of this trash and rotten food and dirty diapers. How is this not good enough?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\u201cAttention to detail,\u201d he\u2019d say.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
I thought we had paid attention to the details, but he kept saying it over and over again. Finally, I asked him:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\u201cUncle Bobby, what does \u2018attention to detail\u2019 mean?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\r\n\u201cLook, son, the details are what\u2019s truly important. Those are what make things come together. If you miss the details, the bigger things don\u2019t actually matter.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
I still didn\u2019t quite understand.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\u201cThat cracked window? That crack becomes representative of the whole apartment, not just the window. People will judge the apartment based on that crack, not how the rest of the place looks.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Then I understood\u2014and it\u2019s a lesson I\u2019ve never forgotten.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
We\u2019ve all heard the idea that if a person has a great customer experience, they\u2019ll only tell a few people, but if they have a bad one, they\u2019ll tell everyone they know.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
It works that way with attention to detail, too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
We\u2019ll go to a fancy restaurant with a great reputation.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
They pull out your chair and there are crumbs on it.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Or the trash in the bathroom is overflowing.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Or the paper towel dispenser is empty.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Our food and service can be incredible\u2014but we\u2019re going to remember that the place seemed unclean. At least for a fancy restaurant. It might even keep us from going back.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
What\u2019s unfortunate in some ways is that people only notice attention to detail when it\u2019s not<\/em> there\u2014when things aren\u2019t right.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
That\u2019s why only cleaning up the big things in Uncle Bobby\u2019s apartments wasn\u2019t acceptable.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
We have to remember, no matter what industry we\u2019re in, that we have to focus on even the most minute details.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
